Madisa to Etosha

Etosha National Park - Safari in Namibia.

Madisa to Etosha

We left Madisa camp, scorpion sting still stinging, topped up on water from the bar, and hit the road for Etosha, Namibia’s largest national park (almost the size of Wales?).

The going was tough, with gravel roads, and lots of corrugation almost the entire way.

We eventually reached Outjo, a small town about 100km South of Etosha and we were pleasantly surprised by the German bakery and supermarket options. We found a bakery and had a lunch of sausage rolls (which they called meat pies) and Louise had a Spinach and Feta pie. We then decided the pastries looked too good so indulged in some pudding - apple pie and apple crumble for Louise, Isla and Edie, and chocolate pancakes for me and Mima!

We then stocked up in the supermarket and headed North for Etosha (stupidly not topping up our fuel when we had the chance).

We got to Okaukuejo camp after the usual fees and formalities at the entrance to the park and were shown to our campsite - not comfortable, but ok - hard ground and close to the fence.

We constructed our camp, the girls tested out the swimming pool (this one was pretty good - clean looking water but still freezing) then we headed to the waterhole for sunset. The waterhole consisted of a bunch of benches behind a wall and some low fences overlooking a man made bore hole with flood lights for late night viewing. We didn’t see much (a few wildebeest, impala and springboks and lots of birds) so we headed back for supper.

After we had eaten, we decided to check out the waterhole again (after dark) - we arrived to see a huge bull elephant taking a drink, and several white rhino alongside giraffes loads of boks and various birds. Wow! It seemed slightly fake, but ultimately all the animals were wild and there under their own free will, so we felt pretty lucky. It was quite a magical experience. We then headed back to camp for a kip ready for an early morning safari drive as soon as the gates out of camp opened!
